TMJ and Jaw pain

Clicking or popping could be trouble if the sound comes from your jaw. Joint sounds are the most commonly recognized symptom of temporomandibular disorders (also know as TMD to dentist and as TMJ to most everyone else). This joint is located just in front of your ear where the upper and lower jaws meet. It is one of the most complex joints in the human body. When the joint is not functioning properly, a variety of noise may be heard. These help determine the cause of the problem.

Sometimes, the sounds occur without discomfort and usually this means that no treatment is needed. However, frequently the sounds occur and then discomfort develops.

If you hear sounds in your jaw joints, inform your dentist. In the event there is evidence of a problem, a thorough focused examination along with special x-rays may be needed.

Most TMD difficulties can be treated in our office. Some cases require care from dental specialist. We have a team of specialist we work with to ensure that you have the best care available.

The symptoms of TMD include:
  • Clicking or difficulty opening and closing the mouth.
  • Earaches without infection
  • Ringing or fullness in one or both ears
  • Frequent headaches especially on waking in the morning.
  • Neck and/or shoulder pain
  • Sensitive teeth with no discernable dental problems
  • Jaw pain or stiffness when yawning, eating, biting or chewing.
